Freaky Friday
Ahhh holidays. How sweet it is when you get two weeks off work and have absolutely nothing to do. Not really sweet actually. Boring in the extreme, which doesn't help when I was bored in the extreme to begin with... Kidding - holidays are wonderful :) SO. I did have something to blog about... I actually had a freaky Friday on the 21st... Seriously the weirdest day I've had in ages.
It was the last day of work, and theoretically we were all just going to lunch. However a friend and I decided to arrive a couple of hours early to tie up some loose ends. We were driving along the Gateway (major highway through Brisbane) at 100 kph. My friend had noticed a slight vibration in the car just after she picked me up, and we were discussing it when it got slightly more noticable.
"What IS that?"
"Dude, your car got serviced less than a week ago! Seriously!"
"Maybe something's loose in the motor..."
So we drove along for another 15 minutes, debating whether we should pull over or anything, when suddenly the vibration turned into a wobble...
"Kate? Indicate and pull over. NOW!"
So she indicated, and barged through the left lane traffic to pull up on the roadside (Note: multilane freeway, and Australians drive on the left) followed closely by the guy in a ute she had barged in front of...
Does he:
a) Yell at her for cutting him off
b) Fix something loose in his tray and drive off
c) Come to the window to tell her she has a REALLY flat tyre and offer to change it?
Yes it was c). NOT our fault - we'd never had a flat tyre before, so how were we supposed to know what was happening??
And before you start smirking about how girls can't change tyres, I totally can. But not this one. What does it take to change a tyre? Three hours, one random passer by, a tow truck, two RACQ mechanics, two compressed air drills, four tyre & auto repair guys, a dozen phone calls, two burnt out drill bits... and a partridge in a pear tree. The car had a locknut on it's tyres, and its thread was stripped. So after this was verified by 5 separate sets of people, they eventually had to keep the car overnight to grind the thing off, and now the wheel needs a stud replaced...
What was funny about all this chaos was that regardless of the fact that it was nearly Christmas, the roads were insane, and our initial passerby had just got off a flight from Melbourne; all of those guys were so incredibly helpful and patient - they went out of their way to help us (or tow us to Beaurepairs...).
After lunch, I was fielding phonecalls at the office wondering how we were getting home. I had sent out an assessment of someone's house plans via email a day or more ago - he had some things to fix up before it could be approved, and I managed to look it over before our holidays. Of course, I get an irate phonecall from the guy - screaming down the phone, demanding his application results and accusing me of lying about my boss being in a meeting. I tried to tell him I had sent it already, but he wasn't listening. I asked him to stop shouting, and at that point my boss took the phone off me, blasted the guy and hung up on him.
The one guy who hadn't been inconvenienced, was the only guy to lose it all day. He did ring up and apologised, and we accepted it, and told him we'd resend his results (which we did), then hung up. I think he might have tried to ring back a couple of times, but my boss said I didn't have to answer the phone. It was last thing on our last Friday afternoon before Christmas for Pete's sake!! And technically we weren't at work - just waiting for our lift home.
So yeah. Fun! Really nice Christmas lunch though...
